“If we never stimulate a new process or thought pattern we become stagnant and repeat the same old patterns and habits we have done for years.” - Dr. Rachel Gilmore
How can your mindset change your life?
If you can control your conscious mind and bring awareness to your thought patterns, you can affect a host of experiences, emotions and attractions you bring to yourself both positive and negative.
Your brain 🧠 changes and molds based on the emotions and actions you have and do daily.
If you repeat an experience over and over again you will neurochemically condition your mind and body to work as of one.
The brain has the ability to change and form new connections over time, known as neuroplasticity. By harnessing the power of neuroplasticity, I help patients think more clearly, learn more easily, develop greater focus, and manage reactive emotions such as responses to pain and changing movement patterns, teaching you to become more resilient and helping you to change your habits and therefore your life.
People believe the concept of neuroplasticity is super complex, but I believe it is simple and take simple action, repeated over time to make significant change in your life.
This is exactly how I have changed my anxiety, pain response from over 18 years of back pain, and making lasting impact in the lives of others for so many aspects of their lives.
But have no doubt - rewiring takes time and effort as with athlete performance, pain relief, addiction healing, healing disease, changing habits, losing weight, becoming a better parent, spouse, and many other things we attempt on a daily basis.
“To induce an effective brain reorganisation, a certain threshold of training (i.e., minimum number of repetitions) needs to be reached. This effect is known as experience-dependent neuroplasticity. In animal models, it was estimated that between 1000 and 10,000 repetitions of the same task (trials) are needed before a permanent change at the synaptic level can be observed.” PMID: 29861717
Dependency of any sort- in our habits, our anxiety, addictive substance, etc all has chemical patterning in the brain. Some harder than others to break - BUT COMPLETELY POSSIBLE. And begins with one thing: your mind.
If rehabilitation and reconditioning the mind can help patients recovery after brain injury, then we can help you change your habits, thoughts and actions to gain more control in your life and live the life you truly dream of.
"Findings of this study provide clear evidence that rehabilitation drives compensatory structural adaptations in functionally relevant subsets of neurons to enhance behavioral recovery after brain injury." - Wang et. al, 2016
Research over decades has focused on how rehabilitation can help things like brain injury, varying diseases related to the nervous system and musculoskeletal system, athletic injury and may other categories. It was unclear 20 years ago exactly how the brain could heal, and if it could even restructure and rebuild damaged areas, similar to nerve injuries. The study above shows that intensive rehab training after focused brain damage can significantly alter the structure of adjacent brain cells close to the injury site.
The basal forebrain cholinergic system, pivotal for rehab to affect brain structure, must be intact. This key brain modulatory system comprises the structures highly relevant for the regulation and maintenance of many cognitive functions, such as attention and memory. As we age, this system is impaired and as a result obstructs the beneficial brain reconstruction from rehabilitation, impeding functional recovery.
As we age, one might assume it becomes more and more difficult to change these pathways in the brain and affect our daily life. Even more reason to continue healthy brain care practices into our aging years.
If we never stimulate a new process or thought pattern we become stagnant and repeat the same old patterns and habits we have done for years. Then we wake up one day either in pain, not living the life we want, developing or having developed physical disease and might in fact be more miserable in our life.
A Negative mindset, that always focuses on being in pain, and never being able to get out of it, will forever be in some sort of pain. Like focusing on the anxiety, the bad habits, etc. and never making a change about your conscious reality.
It is your mind that is convincing you that you will have pain and therefore love the misery. Now that sounds pretty silly doesn’t it? Who doesn't want to get out of pain? I can tell you from first hand experience over my hundreds and growing into the thousands of patients and potential patients that deep down, every one of them would give anything to be out of pain.
But for some, this is not an easy feat. Some people have experienced chronic pain for years on end. These people need more time to teach the nervous system (and thus body) to basically relax the pain response and develop a new strategy and thought pattern around the pain response. Typically there is something there that needs to be dealt with within the person. Or we may have long-standing body inflammation that needs to be under control - but it is usually both the emotional and physical.
Many folks I work with have doubts and fears that are not in the conscious mind when they come to me. Fear of not being able to be active with their family (kids, grandkids) and doubt that they can actually be free from pain are too very common examples. We not only bring this to conscious awareness, but we develop a strategy to bring the person to the desired goal.
We know pain is not simply from the body, but begins in the brain and results from a multi-faceted concept called the bio-psycho-social model of pain. Your body, mind & environment create the experience of pain much like a lot of things we go through in life such as anxiety or depression.
It all boils down to a simple concept: conscious awareness and taking control over your mind and therefore your body.
If we don’t take advantage of the potential, we never will grow or change.
Looking inward through techniques like journaling, reflection through thought, paying attention to triggers, managing stress through healthy outlets, meditation and even exercise are all ways to begin to gain conscious control of your thought patterns and eventually your life.
